Sea buckthorn, the lemon of the north
Sea hawthorn (Latin name: Hippophae rhamnoides) is often referred to as the ‘lemon of the north’. The fruit is known for its high vitamin C content and is processed in beverages, food and skin care products, among other things. The place of origin d is Asia. The European distribution area stretches across central Europe, from the Pyrenees to the Alps and from the foothills of the Alps to the Caucasus. Sea hawks are native to many European countries, including Romania.
Sea hawthorn contains more than 100 different bioactive substances. These include various vitamins: A, C, D, E, F, K, B-complex vitamins (B1, B2, B6), also provitamin A (alpha and beta-carotene), other carotenoids, antioxidants (tocopherol, tocotrienols), flavonoids), various fruit acids (malic acid, citric acid), phenolic compounds, minerals (including zinc, iron, calcium, selenium, copper) and many others.
The unusually high vitamin C content should be emphasized. Depending on the variety, it varies between 200 and 900 mg per 100 g of fruit flesh. This is significantly higher than the average vitamin C content of citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons. Sea buckthorn fruit also contains vitamin B12, which is found almost exclusively in foods of animal origin.
